Besides being an avid paper crafter, one of my favorite “crafty” things to do is make jewelry. So, as you can imagine, I have built up quite the stash of beads! Tiny beads, big beads, wooden beads, glass beads, round beads, square beads… All.The.Beads!
Beads are not only a staple of any jewelry maker’s stash, but they are SOOO fun to incorporate into paper crafting as well. In fact, years ago I was asked to be a contributing Artist/Designer for a “How To” booklet series by Bead & Button Magazine- Scrapbooking With Beads (2005) by Kalmbach Publishing Co.
I enjoyed the challenge of finding new ways to use beads on my scrapbook pages and it was fun to have them featured throughout the publication.
I wanted to revisit those techniques and so I tasked Natalie to incorporate beads into her own page or project for the very last challenge in our “Christmas in July” event.
Check out Natalie’s amazing card featuring hand-strung beads! We love how she used the beads to create a festive garland that brings a bit of holiday pizazz to an otherwise plain castle.
“Beaded Castle Card” by Natalie Strand
Natalie used a favorite technique of layering multiples of the die cut to add depth and dimension to her castle. The shiny red and green seed beads are strung onto thread with the ends secured out of sight just behind the top die cut layer.
The negative space of the cutting die creates a fun Mickey-shaped “window” that Natalie used to showcase cheerful holiday washi tape placed at an angle. The sewn edge with white thread is a great contrasting element against the darker red patterned paper and the glittery mini holiday wreath is the perfect finishing touch to Natalie’s beautiful card!
We hope you’ve been inspired to give beads a try on your own pages and projects. We’d love for you to share them with us, so stop by our Facebook page or tag us on Instagram!
Have a magical day!
